Sandy Oglesby shares her story at the Crescent Ballroom in Phoenix on Aug.13, 2019.

KJZZ partners with the Arizona Republic to bring you the Arizona Storytellers series. We record the live events and share them with you on the radio. In Phoenix, the storytellers share stories about our community or the life events that have shaped them.

Sandy Oglesby was 19 when she met Dwight. He was stationed in Arizona and they were married four months after they met.

Once Dwight got out of the military and finished school, he and Sandy drove to rural Alabama to meet Dwight's family because they hadn't been able to attend the wedding.

Sandy was not expecting the welcome she received when they drove up to her in-laws house.

Sandy Oglesby is a professional storyteller and lives in the Valley.

The next storytelling event is Thursday, Dec. 19, at the Arizona Biltmore. To learn more about the Arizona Storytellers project or how to tell your own story, visit storytellersproject.com.
