Tusayan, Arizona, Declares State Of Emergency After Power Outage
The town of Tusayan sits at the entrance to Grand Canyon National Park.
A town just outside the South Rim of the Grand Canyon has declared a state of emergency due to dangerous weather conditions and a power outage.
More than 1,000 people, including tourists, in Tusayan have been without power since 3 a.m. Friday. In an email to the media, Mayor Craig Sanderson said, “We are working to arrange emergency shelter at the National Park, in buses, and at other locations. We are working with the County Emergency Management team, ADOT, APS and the National Park Service with a priority on clearing roads."
The American Red Cross has set-up an emergency shelter at the Horace Albright Training Center located inside the Grand Canyon National Park. People needing a shuttle ride to the shelter should call 928-638-7302.
As of late Friday afternoon, Tusayan reports about 2 feet of snow, unsafe and impassable roads and fuel shortages.
