The owner of a now-closed Phoenix body donation facility has been found liable for mishandling human remains. The jury in a civil case against the Biological Resource Center of Arizona awarded $58 million to 10 plaintiffs.
The owner of the Phoenix facility was accused of deceiving donor families about how the remains would be used.
Those relatives say they were told the bodies would be used for medical research.
But in at least two cases, the owner knew the remains would actually be used for destructive military testing.
Families also received boxes with what they thought were the cremated remains of their loved ones. They later discovered the bodies were sold to third parties or were still at the facility.
