The Department of Public Safety said one of its detectives, Tucson-based Carmen Figueroa, has resigned, after it was learned she had been brought into the country illegally by her family when she was very young.  Bart Graves is a DPS spokesman.

“State law is that you cannot serve as a peace officer if you are not a U.S citizen, and she was not a U.S. citizen," Graves said.

Graves said it is a sad turn of events, since Figueroa was an exemplary officer who had been with the department for nearly 10 years. He said he doubts Figueroa will be deported but that the DPS is working with the state department to determine whether any charges will be filed against her.
