President Trump dialed back his plans to host next year’s G-7 summit at one of his resorts, the Trump National Doral, near Miami after facing criticism from both sides of the aisle.

Arizona Republican Rep. David Schweikert said the move could be illegal under the Constitution’s emoluments clause.

“I don’t know how Doral is actually owned or what mechanism it is, because you do have the emoluments clause, that’s fairly sweeping, the way it’s in the Constitution,” said Rep. David Schweikert.

Democratic Reps. Raul Grijalva, Tom O’Halleran and Ruben Gallego also spoke out against the planned conference. Gallego said the issue could have very likely ended up in court.

“We certainly have been challenging it before, we’re going to continue to challenge it, there’s a lot of states that have challenged it,” Gallego said.  “Clearly he will be receiving money from a foreign country.”

The Trump administration has said the facility would hold the June 2020 event at cost and not make a profit - but Democrats and constitutional lawyers argue the president still would benefit from the conference.
