Road construction may slow Loop 202 drivers this weekend as work continues on the South Mountain Freeway.

Westbound lanes of Loop 202 will be closed near I-10 this weekend, from 10 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday.

The closures — part of the new South Mountain Freeway project — will span from Kyrene Road to 40th Street and will allow crews to pave the freeway and install overhead signs.

Ramps in that area connecting Loop 202 and I-10 will also be closed.

The South Mountain Freeway is expected to be open by the end of the year while construction activities continue into 2020.

ADOT suggests drivers should take Chandler Boulevard west from I-10 to enter Ahwatukee and follow 40th Street to reach Loop 202. Westbound drivers on Loop 202 should consider using Dobson Road north to Chandler Boulevard, then continuing west to I-10. Those traveling toward downtown Phoenix should consider taking Loop 101 north to US 60, then west to I-10.
