Crime in the U.S. has been on the decline since the 1990s, but findings from the Bureau of Justice Statistics National Crime Victimization Survey for the last few years may suggest that trend is reversing.

The newest numbers from that report, released this week, show the number of violent crime victims has gone up by more than 600,000 since 2015.

There’s also a striking finding about the number of people who say they have been the victim of rape in this year’s survey: It nearly doubled.

For more on what this means, and how significant the numbers might actually be, The Show talked with Fordham University Law professor John Pfaff, who studies criminal justice and sentencing.
