Two major ramps on the Loop 101 freeway in Scottsdale are closed for the next two months. The work on McKellips Road and Thomas Road ramps will affect commuter traffic until May.

Doug Nintzel with the Arizona Department of Transportation says it’s a necessary evil.

“We know that our project, and the restriction that are in place, do cause some concern for drivers, and we’re aware of that. We know that it means going out of your way while a ramp is closed. But, we have to advance the project,” Nintzel said.

The freeways are also busier this time of year as visitors arrive for Spring Training. Nintzel said he’s aware it’s inconvenient for spring visitors.

“Knowing that we held off on things during, say, Super Bowl time,” he said. “We are doing our best during spring training, and then we’ll move into the summer months.”

With the ramps closed, drivers are urged to use McDowell Road and Indian School Road as alternates.
