On Friday morning, a judge sentenced former teacher Brittany Zamora to 20 years in prison and two terms of lifetime probation for molesting a 13-year-old student.

The student’s mother wrote in a victim impact statement that Zamora stole her son’s innocence. The two had sex multiple times, including at the school.

“He doesn’t know who he is anymore and is trying to find himself again,” she wrote.

Zamora, in an orange prison jumpsuit, teared up during the statement and when she apologized to the victim and his family.

“I am ashamed of my actions and completely remorseful and completely regret what took place," Zamora said. ”I am a good and genuine person who made a mistake."

Zamora previously pleaded guilty to sexual conduct with a minor, attempted molestation of a child and public sexual indecency in Maricopa County Superior Court. Zamora said she will seek counseling and has already served as a teacher to fellow inmates. There is no chance Zamora will be released from prison early. She will receive credit for the 478 days she has already been incarcerated.

"My hope is to rejoin society a better and more grateful person," Zamora said.

Zamora was a teacher at Las Brisas Academy in Goodyear when she was arrested in in 2018. There is an ongoing civil lawsuit between the Liberty Elementary School District and the victim's family.
