More color could be coming to more crosswalks in Phoenix. On July 1, the city launched a program that allows businesses, community groups and neighborhoods to make their marks.

The policy for non-standard crosswalk treatments comes after Phoenix approved two rainbow pattern crosswalks under a pilot program last year. They are located at Central Avenue and Portland Street, and Seventh and Glenrosa avenues. Three nonprofits paid to have rainbow colors added to existing crossings as a tribute to the city’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning and/or queer (LGBTQ) community.

Now, other groups can pitch their own ideas as long as they follow the rules and cover design, installation and maintenance costs. The program does not allow advertising, pornographic or violent images, or depictions of smoking products, alcohol or drugs.

City crews will perform all installations using thermoplastic paint material that is skid resistant and non-reflective. Depending on traffic volumes, the life expectancy of thermoplastic crosswalks is generally between two and five years. The program will be administered by the Street Transportation Department.
