The city of Phoenix is on the brink of earmarking a home for every chronically homeless veteran. The city council takes up funding for veterans housing Tuesday, but Mayor Greg Stanton is promising a home for every one of the 56 veterans still without one by Christmas.

“Working with not only the city of Phoenix, but these great partners, we’ve identified locations where there are available rooms,” Stanton said. “Now we’ve got the resources to make sure we can go out and get people to move their stuff, and to provide the support service.”

Stanton made the announcement on Veterans Day at the Victory Place Apartment complex for veterans. If everything remains on track, Phoenix will become the first city in the United States to end chronic homelessness among its veterans, and Veterans Services Director Ted Vogt said the state is on track to find a home for every homeless veteran in Arizona by next February.
