Coconino County health authorities said a second resident has been diagnosed with hantavirus, but the woman is recovering. Officials say they are investigating where the woman contracted the virus.Authorities say a Flagstaff woman died last month from complications of the disease.

Phoenix and Tucson rank very high in a new national forecast for economic growth. The Brookings Institute report said Phoenix took first place and Tucson second for job creation among the top 100 cities during the first quarter of 2013.

Women’s sand volleyball is coming to Arizona State University next spring. The athletic department is still making plans to build courts on campus, but players have already signed up for tryouts. Women's sand volleyball will be a welcome addition to ASU athletics next spring.

At the end of June, the state transportation board decided that part of Arizona State Route 260 West of Interstate 17 needed to be widened at a cost of more than $65 million. It  will be the biggest rural highway project in the state over the next several years, but Arizona Department of Transportation engineers did not even recommend the work.

Since starting in 2008, the Valley’s Metro Light Rail has served Phoenix, Tempe and Mesa. The system has been more popular among riders than many had anticipated. An Interstate-10 West extension is on the way, and a central Mesa extension is expected to be operating by mid 2015, but the idea of light rail in Scottsdale has never gained traction.

On Tuesday, a memorial service attended by Vice President Joe Biden, Senator John McCain and other diginitaries paid tribute to the 19 firefighters who were killed by the out of control blaze. Less than two weeks after that tragedy, residents are returning home and trying to get back to what had been normal life.

A year-long study has started for a proposed Union Pacific Railroad switch yard near Picacho Peak. The project includes the construction of multiple train tracks and commercial warehouses next to Interstate Ten between Phoenix and Tucson.
