9 O'Clock Jazz Special

Lee MorganLee Morgan, a legendary jazz trumpeter and composer, recorded from 1956 until a day before his death in February '72. He was influenced by Clifford Brown and Dizzy but had his own style and sound.  Hear the music of Lee Morgan Monday night at 9.

Originally from Philly he started on vibes, but he was interested in the trumpet and finally his sister bought him a horn for his 13th birthday and he found his voice.  Lee Morgan recorded with Art Blakey and Wayne Shorter on Blue Note Records in the soul jazz, hard bop style, with hits like the The Sidewinder that crossed over to pop and brought Morgan and his music more popularity.  You'll hear some fine grooves and the clear sound of Lee Morgan's trumpet, Monday night on the 9 O'clock Special.
