The Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center is the latest oncology hospital in the Valley to announce it’s expanding. As KJZZ’s Nick Blumberg reports, the announcement comes a little more than a year after the center first opened.

Tuesday, Banner MD Anderson in Gilbert will break ground on a 111,000 square-foot expansion of its outpatient cancer center. The new space will allow for more radiation treatments, stem cell and cellular therapy programs, and new exam and treatment space. CEO Todd Werner says even though the center is relatively new, they’ve seen big growth.

“We look at that trajectory, we can see the space that we have today, and we know that there’s a lead time to get physical space. And so, when you put that together, we said, ‘You know, now’s the time to strike,'" Werner said.

The $62 million project is set to open a little over a year from now. Projects are also underway at the Mayo Clinic, and at the University of Arizona-St. Joseph’s partnership in downtown Phoenix.
