Outreach efforts to potential Latino voters now include a non-traditional theme, concern about the environment.

Traditional messages aimed at Latinos have focused on immigration, education and the economy. Now Mi Familia Vota, a Hispanic voter outreach group, is teaming up with several environmental groups, including the Sierra Club. The goal is to motivate potential Latino voters.

According to a bi-partisan poll conducted in six Rocky Mountain States earlier this year, Latino voters have stronger pro-conservation views than the general population.  

Francisco Heredia is the state director for Mi Familia Vota. He says this is an opportunity with long term implications.

“This will be a gradual process of getting Latinos engaged in environmental and conservation issues because we see the Latino community as the future of this state,” Heredia said.

Heredia says similar collaborations between environmental and Latino outreach groups are also planned for Colorado and Nevada.
