9 O'Clock Special for 7/15

Philly Joe Jones Philly Joe Jones played hard and fast and helped Miles Davis put together Miles' first Quintet in 1955 . He defined the sound and became THE drummer for Blue Note and Riverside records in the 1950s.   Hear him tonight with Dexter, Coltrane, and Miles tonght on the 9 O'clock Special on K-Jazz.

Philly Joe Jones was from Philadelphia and added Philly to his name to distinguish himself from Jo Jones, Count Basie's drummer who was the defining drummer of the 30s and 40s.  Philly Joe took that title for the 50s and part of the 60s until Elvin Jones became the drummer of the day.  Hear why his style meant so much to the bebop tradition and how he helped Miles find the right band tonight when Blaise features the life and music of drummer Philly Joe Jones.
