Arizona Governor Jan Brewer joins Here and Now. It comes days after she signed a series of bills into law that eliminates a $1.6 billion budget shortfall she inherited. As much as those cuts hurt, the next round will be even more difficult, as the state is facing a $3 billion shortfall next year.
While not personally blaming her predecessor for the mess, she did say in a press release that an 'insatiable appetite for spending' the past five years is what got the state into its current mess. A little something called a 'recession' kinda helped make things just a little bit worse. But what's a billion here or there amount elected leaders?
There are still some folks out there who feel abandoned by former governor Napolitano. God forbid, a Democrat allow a Republican to assume the helm and not only deal with the biggest fiscal mess is state history, but then have the power to approve the agenda of social conservatives. Will that happen? We'll find out.
But many capitol observers think Brewer's experience at various levels of government will be a plus, and if she ever wants to be re-elected, won't take Arizona back to the so called 'dark ages' that many liberals fear.
