Here and Now - Infamous Arizona

In this hour of Here and Now February 14th, 2007, 11am to noon, we'll take you back to statehood and learn why women's suffrage was not part of Arizona's constitutional convention. We'll also examine an episode that happened 50 years ago that caused the state to be hands off toward polygamy, and we'll look at the turmoil surrounding the election and removal of the most controversial governor in Arizona history. All part of KJZZ's Arizona Week on Here and Now on KJZZ.

Re: Here and Now - Infamous Arizona

Please tell us about why women were not allowed to serve on juries until about 1943? A a legislator from Tucson, Conrad James Carreon, introduced a bill to accomplish this in 1939. He served a second term from Phoenix and did not run for reelection. His bill passed in the following session. He was the first person of Spanish-language heritage to serve in the Arizona legislature.
