The core mission of ASU is education, but we are seeing many talented non tenure-track faculty leave to go to the community colleges, who offer tenure and higher salaries for teaching positions. Even some other universities (such as the University of California) now offer tenure for Lecturers. Does ASU have plans to do something similar or is brining in research grants to only thing that warrants job security?

The School Choice Arizona, Inc. program awards 100% tax credits to eligible donors of private schools. We recently attended a graduation ceremony at an eligible school in Queen Creek. We were shocked and appalled at the use of tax payer credits. The school buildings used for teaching K-8 are old personal home trailers, the teachers openly ridiculed public schools, used a nickname for one of the Hispanic children (Dino "Beano") during the ceremony and a bumper sticker on the door that is used to enter and leave one of the trailers by the children says, ""Dear God, Why is there so much violence in our schools?",
and God replied, "I don't know, they won't let me in." The "science" teacher openly stated that they teach the fear of God, to not question God's will for it's creatures and creationism, and later was discussing a campaign against homosexual legislation with the parents of one of the children. My question is, "Why are tax payers in Arizona allowing tax credits that could be used to improve public schools that are accountable and transparent to support schools that slander tax supported public schools, fail to prepare students in math and science or even the rudimentary meaning of a hypothesis or theory, and use their influence to promote ideological biases against race, other religions, and homosexuals?". Really, what game are they playing, when the tax payers are funding essentially missionary schools, that clearly violate the fundamental laws that separate church and state and instead promote specific religions?

I am a graduate student in the new School of Earth and Space Exploration (SESE) at ASU. I want to know how you plan to sustain, support, and make good on the promises made to new schools like SESE – a product of your vision for the New American University.
With 60 thousand plus students, at $6,000 a student, tuition alone provides roughly 360 million for the University. In addition to the tuition, it appears that a lot is donated both financially and in land/physical property.

Question: ASU hires numerous highly qualified foreign professors yet many of them have a dialect or accent that is so strong their communication in lectures to students is extemely poor. When hiring does ASU take into consideration the professors ability to clearly communicate in the english language? Great talent and knowledge means little when public communication skills sorely lack.
A surcharge is just a way to get around a tuition increase - the President's did not have to go through the rigor they usually go through with a tuition increase. And I have never heard of a public institution that rescinds money once they have started collecting... It is really too bad i don't believe Pres. Crow or the other university presidents on this issue. They are balancing their budgets on the backs of students.
I am baffled that ASU made major cuts to its undergraduate nursing program (particularly the Polytech campus home of the 17 year old recent nursing graduate wunderkind) despite the upcoming shortage of nurses in Arizona. At the same time I witness continued large numbers of business and communications graduates each year, who from my experience are less focused in their career plan than a BSRN (BS Registered Nurse). Granted the nursing program is expensive to conduct, but would it not be more beneficial to the State of AZ for ASU to shift funds to educate more nurses than more future public relations spins agents.
The model Dr. Crow adopted for increasing research funding at ASU, which has been used by many others before, was well underway before he got here in 2002. It involves giving professors from other institutions with well-established research programs enough incentives (pay, equipment, other resources, and at the time Arizona's low cost of living) to induce them to move to ASU. While he has done very well for himself and such highly-paid professors using this model, what he didn't bargin on was the darkside of this model. While ASU is being transformed somewhat into a research university, it does not do much for the original core mission of ASU: education at a relatively affordable cost. Dr. Crow's excuses are very much like his concept of "A New American University." Just like KJZZ points out "other than a catchy phrase, many students, faculty, and the public couldn't tell you exactly what that means." That is Michael Crow in a nutshell.
I enjoy listening to KJZZ and watching KAET, ASU's PBS station. But while NPR seems to be increasingly relevant, PBS seems not to be. Except for Horizon, I don't see much the pbs station does to benefit viewers like me.
