Here and Now - Arizona Governor Jan Brewer

Arizona Governor Jan Brewer joins Here and Now. It comes days after she signed a series of bills into law that eliminates a $1.6 billion budget shortfall she inherited. As much as those cuts hurt, the next round will be even more difficult, as the state is facing a $3 billion shortfall next year.

While not personally blaming her predecessor for the mess, she did say in a press release that an 'insatiable appetite for spending' the past five years is what got the state into its current mess. A little something called a 'recession' kinda helped make things just a little bit worse. But what's a billion here or there amount elected leaders?

There are still some folks out there who feel abandoned by former governor Napolitano. God forbid, a Democrat allow a Republican to assume the helm and not only deal with the biggest fiscal mess is state history, but then have the power to approve the agenda of social conservatives. Will that happen? We'll find out.

But many capitol observers think Brewer's experience at various levels of government will be a plus, and if she ever wants to be re-elected, won't take Arizona back to the so called 'dark ages' that many liberals fear.

Based on recent coverage, it's easy to conclude that conservatives who control our legislature want unchecked speeding, fewer Mexicans, and anything but taxes to pay for surviving services. I guess the best way to ensure reelection for such "enlightened" politicians is to do whatever it takes to keep voters as uneducated as possible -- thus the drastic cuts in all levels of education. How do you justify your support for this behavior?

With such drastic cuts in classroom spending, how do you propose schools meet all the requirements of NCLB and AYP. You are giving teachers fewer resources and increasing their workloads (via larger class numbers) but asking them to do more. Shouldn't it be common sense that the punitive measures to failing schools be suspended temporarily while the funding has been cut? It is unjust to punish people when the state isn't properly supporting them in their work.

Gov. Jan has made several comments about looking into getting rid of photo enforcement. HB2106 only affects state contracts and does not affect any cities. I want to know if Jan has had a chance to evaluate the programs further and if she has come to any conclusions, or is she just going to let the HB2106 progress through the system.

How do you expect ASU and other public universities to maintain quality in teaching with the severe budget cuts combined with increasing enrollment? Has modifying ASU's charter to cap enrollment been looked at? Where does education K-12 fall on your list of priorities as well as higher education? What does decreasing education funding in the short term mean for Arizona's future in the long term?

I think the governor needs to stop whining and do something productive to move the state forward. It was a Republican legislature that passed all the budgets that she is complaining about. Arizona is in worse shape than other states due to our reliance on real estate. Pulling the funds from the 21st Century Fund is going to leave us in the same position in the future.

Why is the state of AZ laying off workers, when the federal government is sending money to the states so state workers will not have to be layed off? Layoffs only aggravate the state recession.
