Here and Now - Governor Janet Napolitano

Arizona governor Janet Napolitano joins us for what could be her final show as governor. Few elected officials have the ability to discuss a multitude of topics that Napolitano has. Expect the typical Q & A on current events, such as on the economy, the state budget and transition.

We also encourage listeners to call in and let the governor know what you think of the job she's done --both good and bad. Although we do ask that you handle the latter with respect.

Re: Here and Now - Governor Janet Napolitano

Thank you for the opportunity to thank my Governor (smile). I am so proud of being in service to you as a volunteer(the Governor's Council on Small Business). Your integrity, fairness, and commitment to doing what is right for people and families has inspired me continually, to develop my capacity as an advocate, to touch more lives with my work. I am so happy for you and America. We need your character and ability to engage a broad range of stakeholders desperately. Barack is stealing our shining star, but it's for the right reasons. Thank you for bringing sensibility to public service for all
Arizonans. Congratulations :))

Question for the Gov.

Why do you feel it is ok to quit your job, that you were elected to by the people of Arizona, and leave the state for another job before your term is up? We all elected you for a term of office and would hope that you would have fulfilled your term.

Question regarding Domestic Partner benefits

I recently received benefits through the state's Domestic Partner benefit program authorized by the Governor through an executive order. With the new Governor coming in I am afraid this executive order will be reversed. Can my benefits be terminated imediately or will I be grandfathered in? I want to thank Governor Napolitano for all her efforts on behalf of the GLBT Community and wish her well in her new position as Secretarty of Homeland Security.

Re: Here and Now - Governor Janet Napolitano

The state of AZ is losing the best Governor in the world. What do you think will be the policies in AZ now? Sec of St looks like one of the mean ladies of the republican party like the senior lady who called Hillary a bitch. Do you think they believe in their own meaness?

Re: Here and Now - Governor Janet Napolitano

Dear Governor,

I heard you talk recently at a college alumni gathering, and you said that the future economy rests upon us working together. Most of the economic stimulus plans that I have heard about do not address social capital, the ability of citizens to find other people with complementary skills and work on their dreams together?
Are there any leaders in who have the courage and insight to promote social capital stimulus and help us work together for a better economy?

Thank you,
Barry

Re: Here and Now - Governor Janet Napolitano

Thank you Governor Napolitano for your excellent service to the State of Arizona. I wonder what we as citizens should be looking out for when the Secretary of State assumes the Executive Office? What are the main issues we should be ready to call our representatives about in the coming year or so?

On the federal front, I beseech you to act to change the tenor of the DHS. Whether in the airports or dealing with Immigration related issues, the DHS has a wartime mentality that isn't helping any of us, making dealings stressful and raising suspicions on all sides. DHS is not a branch of the military. It is a tax payer funded agency that must start serving its boss - the tax payer, rather than intimidating us. A stroke of genius would also be to change the name to anything but "Homeland". It makes the United States sound ignorant and provincial. Best wishes!

Here and Now - Governor Janet Napolitano

Please ask about how come Coyotes are charging $6,000 per person to smuggle immigrant across the border, plus another $6,000 to transport them from Phoenix to secondary locations - why does not the US Government Department of Homeland Security and ICE set up a guest worker program, charge people $6,000 per annum to get a guest worker license, and then an additonal $6,000 for transport to the location of their job? If 1 million guest workers take advantage of this, the US government brings in $12 BILLION dollars, which can be used to subsidize the health care and education while these guest workers are in the country. We could also charge them $1,000 to obtain a state-authorized temporary driver's license, and also collect $2,000 to pay for one year of automobile insurance. We can keep track of them because they are in the system, and send them home at the end of one year, or, if they've been good, re-up them for another $6,000 - why is a government that is now BROKE not proactively pursuing a policy that will make money and legalize guest workers?

Gov'na:

As head of the Department of Homeland Security, how will you ensure that we do not see a continuation of the civil rights abuses and racial profiling so prevalent in recent years in the border states?

Re: Here and Now - Governor Janet Napolitano

Thank you for your service to our state and I hope you do well. I have enjoyed very much hearing you on Here and Now. Do you know if Governor Brewer will continue to appear on the show?

Re: Here and Now - Governor Janet Napolitano

A couple of weeks ago, 60 minutes tv show had a story about how widows of Americans who were once on a path to citizenship are now facing deportation since they are "no longer married" to an American. The story was just heartbreaking. As Secratery of Homeland Security, will you be able to change this?

Thanks,
Dennis

Re: Here and Now - Governor Janet Napolitano

Govenor thank you for doing your job in a way that made me extremely proud to be an Arizonan. Your balanced, logical approach to governing has provided a much needed role model.

Could you guide us on how best to respond as citizens when the legistiure and new governor seek to use religon to justify limiting the rights of citizens?

Best wishes, you have my vote whenever you are ready to be a senator from Arizona

Re: Here and Now - Governor Janet Napolitano

Is the Governor at all concerned many of her legacy activities will be reversed with the next Republican governor. IE All day Kindergarten, Western States Climate Initiative, and most interestingly, billing the federal government for immigration enforcement.

Re: Here and Now - Governor Janet Napolitano

Governor,
Your service to the state has been greatly appreciated, you will be missed (especially your sense of humor, common sense and vision).
I wonder how you will deal with the illegal immigration issue from the Federal side--what do you think needs to be done -border control, guest workers? immigrants already here illegally?
Thank you so much for your service.

Re: Here and Now - Governor Janet Napolitano

Words mean a lot. And I am wondering what the Governor feels about the term "war on terror" that's been used for the last 8 years, and if she will continue to use the term as Sec. of Homeland Security?

Re: Here and Now - Governor Janet Napolitano

What are some of your priorities in immigration reform? Obviously you'll follow the President-elects lead...but where are your priorities...more visas, more enforcement, more temporary workers, etc?
