Governor Napolitano

19 November
2008

Governor Napolitano

Where do you begin? So many issues to discuss with the governor, only one hour's time.

Is she DC bound to take a cabinet post in the Obama administration? Will she testimony before Congress help states get more money to cover health care and other costs? What will she do about Arizona's dwindling revenues? Oh, and that one million dollar fine paid by Honeywell for polluting groundwater in South Phoenix that is earmarked for the Western Climate Initiative? Might want to make sure lawmakers are in on the deal because they have a way of calling 'check' by moving a different chess piece. Or in his case approving the continuation of the Department of Environmental Quality for two years instead of ten.

I'm sure you have a question or ten to ask. Please remember the more concise a question is (meaning shorter and to the point) the more likely it will be asked of Governor Napolitano.

Re: Governor Napolitano

Dear Governor,

Is there anyone or any group looking at social capital in Arizona, the ability of Arizonans to meet each other and work together?

A social capital stimulus plan, where people could find others with complementary skills and resources may help create new businesses in Arizona at a relatively low cost compared to other forms of economic stimulus.

Thank you.

Re: Governor Napolitano

Earlier this year, the State of Arizona approved a stimulus package for Capital Improvement projects (State and University construction projects). This week, the State of Arizona Legislature placed a large portion of these projects on hold due to the state’s financial crisis. How can we get these projects back on track? Are you interested in Public Private Partnerships to finance these projects?

Re: Governor Napolitano

Governor,

All of us understand how appealing an offer to join the new Obama cabinet must be.

I urge you to consider the consequences to the citizens of Arizona, if you resign before your term as Governor ends, and you are replaced by a Republican for the next two years.

You are all that Arizona consumers, parents, non white citizens, etc., have to protect us from the 'conservatives' in the legislature.

The acting Governor, a Republican, with the help of a conservative Republican Legislature will gut what is left of an already bare - bones state budget. Programs such as school budgets, evironmental services, regulatory and oversight boards, will suffer.

Arizona will become a place that longer is a pleasant place to live or even visit.

You know that a position in the new administration will be waiting for you two years from now.

Thank you.

Re: Governor Napolitano

I would like to know your position on the passage on Proposition 102? Do you think that it is a smart move for Arizona? You seem to be passive on the civil rights of the GLBT community in Arizona and I was wondering if you think this is an accurate assessment?

Re: Governor Napolitano

I just heard on the Diane Rehm show that you are being considered a possibility for the President-elect's head of Department of Homeland Security. Is this something that would interest you? What do you feel would be your strengths and weaknesses in this position? How would such an appointment impact Arizona?

Re: Governor Napolitano

Will the work of the Western Climate Initiative become a model for action at the federal level. Are you enthusiastic about Arizona's participation in this project?

Re: Governor Napolitano

Senator elect Napolitano,

When are you going to begin fund raising for your first 6 year trip to Washington? We anxiously await your declaration.

Re: Governor Napolitano

I'd like the Governor to please comments on the impending social change from the old boys club to the government of the people now that women have cleaned up the mess of the glass ceiling?

Re: Governor Napolitano

Dear Governor,
Do you recognize that in order to reduce and therefore meet operating costs, building new infrastructure that now in new times can more aggressively address efficiency and sustainability shortcomings that have been status quo and are the hidden base of much of operating costs we bear now? Mass transit like light rail, though more costly to construct, have less operating costs and building efficiency with climate response design operates with less cost. But transit is getting cut now, and gas prices will go up again, can you help citizens from having to bear the "fat " of past devil may care inefficient building. Wont capital improvements, if done consciously, boost economy AND reduce operating costs?
We have to hope for that consciousness from you.

Re: Governor Napolitano

If the Federal Government managed the illegal immigration issues, wouldn't the state's and counties' financial positions be markedly improved? Should the Federal Goverment reimburse AZ for the funds already spent?

Re: Governor Napolitano

I'm happy the governor hasn't resigned just yet.
Thank you for your kind and gentler governing styles.
Good luck Guv!

Re: Governor Napolitano

I live in a gated community of 210 units with at least 20 residents retaining out of state plates that I see as potential revenue for our state in many forms... why isn't this enforced? It is not fair to the rest of the arizonans that these people use our roads daily for years but don't pay for them!! Just by enforcing the law for people to get AZ plates, we could increase much needed funding for our state!!

Also, I'm wondering what the plan is for an alternate route from Phoenix to Flagstaff?
thanks for a job well done!

Re: Governor Napolitano

Politics aside, don't Arizonans have a right to know if you're leaving in the near future? We elected you.

Re: Governor Napolitano

I've applied to work with Obama's transition team. I left Az in 6th grade to live in Iran for 18 months. It was before the revolution and my father was evacuated when things got worse. I hope to work with the diplomatic mission to Iran and would appreciate the governor's recommendation. I have education and mental health training and hope to join the team. I too will miss Arizona if called to serve. I'm very proud of Senator McCain, Governor Napolitano and all Arizona citizens.

Re: Governor Napolitano

In contrast to the caller and others who asked you to stay, if you are offered the opportunity I would urge you to take the chance to make a positive difference. The people of Arizona chose to tie your hands in November and it will be very difficult to make things happen for the remainder of your term that is more than administrative. While the people of Arizona choose to revel in their 1960's war heroes and 1950's thinking I suggest you go forward with our new President into the 21st century.

Re: Governor Napolitano

If you do stay, will you continue to invoice an Obama administration for immigration enforcement and corrections costs? And what happened to immigration as a forefront issue, anyway?

It was fun to watch our Governor on SNL. Wardrobe by NBC, not DNC!

Re: Governor Napolitano

Hi Governer,
My dad has been a bar owner in Phoenix for 30 years. His business has been relatively consistent and successful throughout the years, but the smoking ban and increased DUI laws have definitely decreased sales and had a negative impact for the company. I don't think these new laws should be reversed, but I am curious about how the light rail might help out struggling bar businesses in the state. Cabs are expensive! Do you think the lightrail will at least run past 2am? Or are there any other solutions to safe and affordable transportaion? Might seem trivial, but it surely effects our local economy.
