Election Primer

Campaign signs are sprouting up. Soon, you'll be bombarded with radio, and TV ads--not to mention direct mail promoting one candidate over another.

Yep, it's election time. Early voting begins in two weeks!

KJZZ's capitol reporter Mark Brodie hosts an election primer edition of Here and Now. On the agenda: an overview of the ballot propositions voters will face come November as well as contested primary races at the state and federal level.

Re: Election Primer

I am a teacher in the Kyrene School District and I am nervous. This fall, voters will have the opportunity to unify the Kyrene, Tempe Elementary, and Tempe Union School Districts. However, many voters without children or direct school district involvment are unaware of the impacts of this legislation.
While for some areas of our state, redistricting/unifying could be beneficial, in our East Valley Area this is not the case.
There is no funding attached to this proposed legislation leaving the school districts 9 months and no funding to merge into one huge district. Many questions have also not been answered with redistricting, such as How will salaries be affected?, How will we integrate these three very different technological districts (Kyrene is a PC district and Tempe El is a MAC district)?, Who will pay for a new district office and what will happen to existing buildings?. I could go on and on.
The truth is, this is a forced marriage that will not work the way it is written now. The Tempe Elementary Education Association, Tempe Secondary Education Association, and Kyrene Education Association urge voters to take a stance of opposition (as all of our Governing Boards have done!) and vote NO on redistricting in November!!
Thank you!

Re: Election Primer

I'm wondering about the potential impact of one ballot measure in particular: the "Arizona Majority Rules Initiative." This sounds like a dangerous end-run around our ballot initiative process to me. It's touted as an anti-tax measure but might it effectively torpedo our entire initiative process?

Re: Election Primer

Erin,

I'll see if we can get to the school consolidation issue. If not, we'll devote a show to it later this fall.

I'm just curious if the program guests think the Gay Marriage Amendment will pass and if so, do you think that the state will start losing citizens to California?

Re: Election Primer

I'm sick of these special interest initiatives. How many are truely from citizens and how many are from special interests looking to get their way?!

Re: Election Primer

Hi Paul,
I appreciate that. Please let me know if you would like me to be on the program that day. Myself and Katie Barnes from Tempe Elementary Education Association are heading the campaign against unification. We would both be happy to come in if our school schedules allow it!
Thanks again!
Erin
PS- Check the East Valley and Ahwatukee Republic this Friday for our Op Ed!
