Here and Now: Local Immigration Policies
A panel made up of two former Arizona US Attorneys, a former Arizona Attorney General, and Maricopa County Attorney has recommended a new policy for Phoenix Police to deal with illegal immigrants. Police will ask immigration status of anyone arrested for a misdemeanor or felony crime, but not for civil violations, such as jaywalking, speeding, etc. They will also not ask immigration status of victims and eyewitnesses. What do you think of the new policy? Does it go far enough? Not enough? Or too far?
Plus, what are your thoughts on the state's employer sanctions law now that a federal judge has said it's legal. Is that giant sucking sound coming from the thousands of illegal immigrants leaving the state afraid they won't find jobs? Does it go far enough? Not enough? Or too far?
The answer is going to be yes and no to all those questions.The Mayor is sure to have criticism from both sides of the issue. Thats what is so difficult about this issue.
I think Gordon has struck a good balance. When that happens, many will say not enough, many will say too far. Lets give Gordon credit for saying this policy is 20 years old and must adapt with times.
20 years ago who would have thought that the Federal Govt would be planning on a program to bail out individuals facing mortgage foreclosures? Who even thought this woudl be an issue. Same with immigrtation. Times have changed and I for one credit Gordon for doing something proactive instead of sitting on his hands. That is leadership.
This seems like a good balance to me, especially in the case of victims of crimes and eyewitnesses. If the govt sees fit to make deals with multiple murders like Sammy the Bull Gravano to put away dozens of other thugs and murderers, then surely the same type of policy can be used by local police to bust gangs, drug cartels and human smuggling rings. If someone in this country illegally helps bring down a murderer or rapist or other felon with their testimony or information, thats OK by me if they stay here.
Sounds to me like both guests are looking to solidify Phoenix as a "sanctuary city". My experience with illegals has been two car accidents (both times illegals and them receiving the citations), costing me thousands of dollars beyond what I already pay for these people to be here, poor, broke with nothing but assistance from me and my government. Sick of it, sick of it. I'm a Arizona 45 year Az native and I have all kinds of hispanic friends and relatives, we are all sick of the illegals taking advantage of America.

I keep hearing the term "illegal alien" and I would just like to request that the term be stricken from the rhetoric used by commentators. If you could please make an effort to use the term "undocumented immigrant" instead of "illegal alien". No human being is illegal and the use of the term further dehumanizes undocumented individuals. Where are the people whom must live in the mist of the growing modern ghettos, being created by the need of 8-12 adults making non liveable wages to all pile into one house. The City of Phoenix Housing department indicates that to afford a studio apartment with no bedroom one must earn $10.56 per hour.
To afford a 2 bedrrom apartment one must earn $16.06 per hour.
These dormatory houses are easy to locate, look for 6-9 vehicles and 300 gallon community trash cans that are over filled with trash all over the ground with in hours of the once a week trash pick up.
So I challenge you to speak to the long term, often elderly residence who have seen the rapid detteriation in the neighborhoods where they raised there now productive adult children! What I have heard time and time again is they have been trasported to a 3rd world country.
Tuesday afternoon a 28 foot RV was wondering around the neighbhorhood. I called Crime Stop because it did not appear to have a license plate. Apparently another neighbor had also called in, because he witnessed them unloading their waste as they drove around.
