Here and Now: The Arts

The new art season begins in the valley. Here and Now looks at the various performances set for the 2007-2008 season. We also take a closer look at the newest arts facility, the Tempe Center for the Arts. Plus, why do arts organizations always seem to have fund raising difficulties and what is being done to draw new patrons to the arts.

And what happens if the city of Phoenix holds an election and nobody votes? Here and Now provides results and analysis of an election where the mayor's seat, four city council seats and a half dozen propositions are on the ballot.

Re: Here and Now: The Arts

I wonder if building "arts centers" is really a good way to support the arts. It seems to me that it looks good for a city to build such amenities, but I'm not sure it's best for the arts groups that use them. It puts the art producers in a constant state of "renting," rather than gaining the benefits of "owning" their own homes.

In cities such as Minneapolis/St. Paul and Seattle, you'll find most arts groups own their facilities; city-operated arts centers are rare. And as these arts groups grow, they can improve their facilities for their own benefit, or find/build their next home and allow another arts groups to use their old space. It's perpetual growth in the arts that I don't see in the valley.

How does the valley arts scene compare to other cities it's size?

I worked in Arts marketing for many years--and continue to work as a performer. Even on the inside, I wonder why the Arts continue to beg as non-profits. Given the perpetual struggling, why not switch strategy and go commercial?

Re: Here and Now: The Arts

in order to raise adult theatre goers, parents need to be taking their children to the theatre now. not only are there outstanding companies such as Childsplay, perhaps the best childrens theatre in the nation, but other local groups such as Ahwatukee Childrens Theatre and East Valley Children's Theatre that put on quality performances that not only engage children, but give the parents an opportunity to teach children on how to be a theatre patron

Re: Here and Now: The Arts

Watching imported Broadway shows is not supporting the local arts.
