When you watch the Super Bowl on Sunday you may notice the field really looks good. There’s a reason for that.

University of Phoenix Stadium this season became the first in the NFL to use high output LED lighting. Officials say that cuts energy use by more than 75 percent. But the system does more than that.

Lighting engineers expect to provide nearly 20 percent more light for the Super Bowl than for any previous NFL game.

That’s expected to allow the TV cameras to get more clarity and a greater depth of focus, allowing them to zoom in tighter on replays and super slow motion without the blurriness you often see.

That could help replay officials get controversial calls right. And that could help change the outcome of the game.
