Senator Jeff Flake was a keynote speaker at Thursday's National Press Club Headliners Luncheon in Washington, D.C. The Arizona senator used the speech to demand change and criticize President Donald Trump's actions as well as the divide within the Republican party.

Flake, who previously announced he isn't seeking re-election at the end of his term at year's end, said the political landscape needs to be overhauled.

"We will get through this," Flake said, "and when we do, there will be much work to repair the damage. There will have to be an accounting for how we got here, so that we might not find ourselves here again."

Flake has been critical of President Trump since he took office, and in Thursday's speech, he said Trump's actions, most notably his attack on the press, is hurting the nation.

"The irony should not escape us here," Flake said, "that someone whose name has become known as a builder would have such a penchant for destruction."

When asked if he's considering running for president in 2020, Flake said it's not in his plans but he won't rule it out.
