Arizona Offers Land Swap Deal For Hopi Trust Land Southeast Of Flagstaff
Arizona U.S. Sen. John McCain is reviewing a land swap deal between the federal and state governments.
The land under negotiation sits to the southeast of Flagstaff and Interstate 40.
It was placed in a federal trust for the Hopi Tribe in 1996 as a result of a decades-old mineral and land rights settlement between the Tribe and the Navajo Nation.
Now, the state is offering large tracts of land elsewhere in northern Arizona in exchange for that trust land spanning 150,000 acres between Walnut Canyon and the high-end golfing community of Forest Highlands.
McCain’s office said the senator will remain engaged with local communities before a proposal moves forward.
