The latest farm numbers are out and experts say Arizona shoppers are saving a little more on basics at the grocery store when compared to this time last year.

Comparing fourth quarter numbers between 2016 and 2017, the Arizona Farm Bureau Federation's latest report showed shoppers saving about 10 cents per pound on deli meats and cheeses and about 25 cents per gallon of milk.

Flour, bread and cereals also came up cheaper, with savings ranging from 4 cents to 40-cents per package.

But, those gains are lost when shoppers throw in a pound of bacon and a dozen eggs and pay about 40 cents to 50 cents more for each.

Prices for other proteins like sirloin tip roast remain much the same as last year. Julie Murphree with the Bureau said that's driven by a steady supply and demand right now.

"I do think that prices for beef will be strong in 2018. And part of that is consumer demand [for] beef...those choice cuts, the higher priced cuts of meat," Murphee said.

Still, at less than two bucks for a dozen eggs, Murphree called that a bargain and cautioned against dropping meat products to balance the budget.

"Your nutritionist will tell you to make sure you have that rainbow color on your plate," she said. "And it always goes good with at least five to six ounces of your red meat."

Parents packing lunch boxes will likely see the biggest cost saver in the basic basket this year with the Red Delicious Apples, where the price has dropped more than 60 cents per pound.

All told, the same basket of 16 shopping items will cost Arizona shoppers about $45.25 - about $1.82 less than this time last year.
