Arizona Sen. John McCain is home for the holidays and continuing treatment with his doctors at the Mayo Clinic.

Doctors for the 81-year-old Arizona statesman said McCain is "responding positively" to ongoing treatment for glioblastoma, a brain cancer.

That is in despite of having to fight a viral infection last week that landed him in Walter Reed Medical Center for several days.

On social media Sunday, Meghan McCain-Domenich tweeted that her father is doing well and spending Christmas at home.

A senate spokesman for McCain said he plans to return to Washington in early January ready to work. But, he will miss the important vote on the GOP tax bill.

That contradicted President Donald Trump's remarks to reporters on Sunday.

He claimed he had spoken to Cindy McCain, the Senator's wife, and was assured that he will head back to DC if his vote is needed to pass the $1.5 trillion tax plan.
