Massage Envy says it wants to create what it calls “meaningful change” after recent reports of sexual assault at its spas. The Scottsdale-based chain has a released a six-point plan to combat inappropriate behavior by employees toward customers.

This comes about a week after Buzzfeed published an article saying more than 180 customers have reported sexual misconduct at Massage Envy locations across the country.

The story said many who complained believed their claims were mishandled or ignored by employees at individual franchises or by the national company.

On its website, Massage Envy said these reports are “heartbreaking” and detailed a plan for the future that includes bolstering background checks for message therapists and creating a safety advisory council.

Massage Envy’s CEO says the company has seen a moderate drop-off in membership since the Buzzfeed article.
