Ryan Winkle testifies at a disciplinary hearing at the Mesa City Council.

The Mesa City Council is sifting through dozens of applicants to fill former Councilman Ryan Winkle’s seat after he pleaded guilty to an extreme DUI this summer.

Now 33 applicants are vying for Winkle’s seat after he was removed from City Council in late August. The council will select a shortlist of candidates on Thursday.

Then, on September 28, the council will interview the finalists and choose a replacement.

The appointed applicant will fill the position until an election in August 2018.
