Arizona Fall League Fires Up, Tests New Rules

The Arizona Fall League baseball season gets underway with three games Tuesday.

Arizona Diamondbacks prospects play for the Salt River Rafters and will be hosting the Scottsdale Saguaros at Salt River Field at 6:35 p.m. Tuesday.

The Fall League, which last year tested the instant replay rules in effect this year in the Major Leagues, will this year be testing some potential new rules to speed up the game.

One of them another requires the pitcher to throw a pitch within 20 seconds of getting the ball, one requires the batter to keep one foot in the batter’s box during his at bat, and a third limits the number of trips to the mound managers, coaches and catchers can make, other than to change pitchers, to three.

And if you go to a Fall League game you may notice that the manager can just signal the umpire to intentionally walk a batter, rather than having the pitcher fire four pitches that miss the plate.  How many, if any, of these rules will be adopted is not known.
