Repair work has started at a Phoenix shelter for homeless families. The UMOM shelter experienced extensive flood damage from last week’s monsoon storms.

Officials say families staying in the damaged rooms were moved to an area that receives incoming residents.

Alex Scoville said crews are tearing rooms apart from the highest water levels down, which in most cases was about 2 feet.

"They are knocking out dry wall, they are rearranging appliances, they are scraping," Scoville said. "It’s really crucial to us that we make sure these rooms are safe to live in and that there’s no mold growth and no extensive water damage."

Scoville said much of the repair cost is being covered by the organization’s flood insurance, which was obtained over the summer. She estimates most of the repairs will be completed within a week.
