Fire Crews Cut Down Trees In West Valley To Fight Brush Fire

September 30, 2013

Fire crews are battling a brush fire in the West Valley. Rural Metro Fire’s Colin Williams says firefighters are stamping out the blaze by cutting down salt cedar trees in the area.

“Salt cedar has a high oil content so it burns very hot and very smoky,” Williams said. “So, there’s trees that are probably 70 feet tall and they’re actually burning on the inside. The only way to put them out is by cutting the tree down and by flooding it with water.”

Williams says the fire is contained in a small area near Southern and 100th Avenue. Williams says the fire is not spreading and that residents who live nearby are safe.
