Mesa Councilman Ryan Winkle Pleads Guilty To DUI Charges
A Mesa councilman has pleaded guilty to charges of driving while intoxicated.
Ryan Winkle was arrested in Tempe in May on suspicion of driving under the influence. His blood alcohol level was above point two zero which is considered a super extreme DUI under Arizona state law.
On Thursday at Tempe Municipal Court, Winkle pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of extreme DUI and was sentenced to six days in jail and 49 days of home detention.
Winkle was previously convicted of an extreme DUI in Scottsdale in 2009.
The Mesa City Council excused Winkle from meetings after he took a voluntary leave of absence.
The council is exploring its own disciplinary actions against him, which could include removal from office.
