September 23, 2013

A Department of Public Safety Officer survived a highway shooting over the weekend  near Payson. Spokesman Carrick Cook says the officer was shot during a routine traffic stop Saturday night.

“Our officer made a traffic stop just south of Payson and the officer approach the car,” Cook said. “The suspect involved in this shot the officer several times.”

Cook says the 14-year veteran managed to drive himself to a Payson hospital, where he’s in stable condition. According to Cook, the suspect led police on a high speed chase for about 40 miles, then drove into a ditch. He was found dead in the vehicle, with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
