The Goodwin Fire has burned 28,000 acres as of July 5, 2017.

The Goodwin Fire has burned more than 28,000 acres near Payson. The fire is more than 90 percent contained — but there’s another danger for those in the area even after the fire is out.

Monsoon storms are in the forecast all weekend in the high country where the wildfire burned. Now, fire officials are warning residents to take precautions against possible post-fire flooding.

After a major fire, there's a high risk of flooding during the monsoon because there’s more loose dirt, ash, and rocks. A community meeting on the potential for flooding, flood insurance and runoff hazards is planned for 6 p.m. Wednesday at Mayer High School.
