The long-running tension in the Middle East continues, and the U.S. role in that region could be modifying — at least slightly — depending on decisions still to be made by the Trump administration.

And it can be especially difficult for journalists to gain access and understanding in some very different cultures.

Washington Post journalist Souad Mekhennet is the daughter of a Turkish mother and a Moroccan father and was raised in Germany. She’s also a Muslim.

She talks about her background and experience in covering the Middle East—including being the journalist to uncover the identity of ISIS executioner “Jihadi John” — in the new book, "I Was Told to Come Alone: My Journey Behind the Lines of Jihad."
