Arizona has regained its position as the second largest source of fresh-market vegetables nationwide.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture said both Arizona and Florida increased fresh vegetable production in 2016, and now rank second and third overall, switching places.

Both follow California, which continues to lead the nation.

Excluding potatoes, sweet potatoes and mushrooms, the U.S. produced 34.9 billion pounds of fresh vegetables this year - down one percent from 2015. Onions and lettuce account for about 35 percent of output.

The late April report from the USDA’s Economic Research Service said Arizona’s growers contributed about 12 percent of the national fresh market farm value, or approximately $4.5 billion.
