Arizona doctors who perform abortions are waiting to hear whether Gov. Doug Ducey will sign the live-birth abortion bill now on his desk.

Lawmakers passed the bill on both the House and Senate floors Wednesday after watching a newly released undercover video on live abortions.
 
The bill mandates doctors use all efforts to save a fetus if it shows a single sign of life once removed from the mother.

Officially, Arizona already requires doctors take action to save a baby if it shows signs of life. But the new bill says life includes: Breathing, a heartbeat, umbilical cord pulsation or voluntary muscle movement.

Representative Paul Boyer argued on behalf of the bill and babies born prematurely.

“Health care providers don't always know the chances of survival until they give a baby a chance,” Boyer said.
 
Opponents of the bill said lawmakers who voted for it are ignoring earlier testimonies from doctors working with families who tragically lose a child at birth.

"We end up depriving families of their last moments with what they hoped would be a bright future, but was not,” said Democrat Representative Kirsten Engel.

The governor has not indicated whether he will sign the bill into law, although he has signed every abortion measure that’s crossed his desk so far this session.
