Four cases of a dangerous strain of E. coli have been detected in Arizona. There have been a total of 12 cases in five states. And the Arizona Department of Health Services is recommending people avoid eating I.M. Healthy brands of soynut butter and other products containing the soynut butter.

All the cases in Arizona have affected children. And Dr. Cara Christ, director of Arizona DHS, says they’re working quickly to warn child-care facilities if they carry the brand.

“We did as a department did send out a note to all licensed child-care facilities because we know this manufacturer distributes. But it’s never a bad idea for parents to confirm that their children will not be eating this. It just adds one more levels of checks," Christ said.

All the children affected became ill after Jan. 16 of this year and reported eating the soynut butter.

Christ says if this strain of E. coli that has been identified is left untreated, it could lead to kidney failure.
