Last month, Arizona Sen. John Kavanagh introduced legislation that would give businesses time to fix violations stemming from the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

This so-called cure period concerns many people within the disability community. Disability advocates and some state lawmakers gathered at the state Capitol on Wednesday to oppose Senate Bill 1198.

Sen. Kate Brophy McGee and Katie Hobbs were both on hand to oppose the proposed bill, which, if passed, would give businesses up to of 90 days to fix an ADA violation. 

Larry Wanger with the Arizona Statewide Independent Living Council was also at Wednesday’s rally.

"There was really a lot of energy, lot of chanting, and those types of things you see at a rallies, in terms of reminding people that access is a civil right, that we want access now," Wanger said.

He said Rep. Maria Syms introduced House Bill 2504, as an alternative to Kavanagh’s bill. It does not call for a cure period.
