The University of Arizona is officially opposing President Donald Trump’s executive order severely limiting immigration from seven predominantly Muslim countries. Officials estimate about 174 of their students, researchers or faculty are from one of the impacted areas.

UA was one of Arizona’s first public universities to issue a statement about the move. University President Ann Weaver Hart said the school community has serious concerns about its provisions and believes lawsuits challenging it will be successful.

Suzanne Panferov, the associate vice president of global initiatives at UA, added, "International education is the heart of everything," she said. "We have alumni from the University of Arizona all around the world who support us, who are leaders in other countries, and this does not bode well for the future."

Panferov thinks if enough universities come out against the executive order, it might convince the Trump administration to reconsider or make the order less restrictive.
