Ducey: Arizona Lack Of Discrimination Laws Not Likely To Deter National Events

Under Arizona law, it’s still legal for businesses and individuals to discriminate against gay and transgender people. But at an event Wednesday promoting the upcoming NCAA Final Four Tournament, Gov. Doug Ducey said he doesn’t think that will prevent the state from hosting similar events in the future.

Last year, the NCAA pulled out of North Carolina after that state’s legislature took a series of actions that ran afoul of the group’s values of inclusion and gender equality.

Why the Board did not consider Arizona’s stance on the issue to be problematic when it awarded the event in 2014 is unclear. But Ducey said there is a difference.

"Well, everyone knows I'm against discrimination in all its forms," Ducey said. "I think what happened in North Carolina was different in many ways because it happened during the legislative session."

Ducey said he has no plans to tell the legislature to change the statues.
