A Maricopa County sheriff’s vehicle has been recovered after it was stolen Thursday morning in Gila Bend.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to reports around 9 a.m. of a disrobed woman at a gas station in Gila Bend.

Once on the scene, deputies encountered a nude woman who claimed she had been sexually assaulted. As the responding deputy went to the back of his vehicle in search of something to cover the woman, she jumped in his vehicle and took off.

MCSO spokesman Ben Henry said it is atypical for a deputy to leave their vehicle running when arriving at a scene. “But any time you have someone that’s traumatized, which the video depicts as well, then he’s going to get out and try to treat her as quickly as possible," Henry said of a deputy's actions.

After a high-speed eastbound pursuit for more than 70 miles, the vehicle was brought to a halt by stop sticks.

Officers used non-lethal force to detain the woman. She is currently hospitalized, and deputies are looking into the allegations of sexual assault.
