The North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park.

The facilities at the Grand Canyon’s North Rim shut down for the season last month, and now the highway that leads to the North Rim is closing as well.

Starting Thursday, State Route 67 will be blocked to traffic past the little town of Jacob Lake. The Arizona Department of Transportation doesn’t clear snow from the highway, which leads more than 40 miles to the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park.

The North Rim averages more than 9 feet of snow annually, according to the National Weather Service. Highway 67 is scheduled to reopen in mid-May, along with North Rim lodges, campgrounds and other amenities.

But at the Grand Canyon’s South Rim, State Route 64 remains open all year long.
