Republican congresswoman Martha McSally won a decisive victory in the usually tough Congressional District 2 in southern Arizona. The Republican congresswoman won re-election by 10 p.m., catching many of her staffers by surprise.

"I’ve never had this experience before where we had an election night party and we knew what the results were and we could actually celebrate. The first year took 14 days and then I lost and then the second time took 43 days. So it’s a wonderful new experience to be here with friends supporters and family," she said.

According to state recorder results, McSally beat her Democratic opponent Matt Heinz by about 18,000 votes.

"When we go back on Monday, we’ve gotta focus on funding the government and funding the government and funding the military. We’ve got some important provisions in our defense bill to protect Davis-Monthan, Fort Huachuca, keep the A-10 flying that we’ve gotta get across the finish line," she said.

If current projections by the Associated Press hold, McSally will join a Republican-controlled House of Representatives in Washington.

Preparations were under way at the Viscount Hotel where the Republican congresswoman was holding her own private event away from the GOP in Tucson.

"We’ll be heading down there but we’ve had independents and Republicans and Democrats support us, and so we’re having the opportunity for them to come and celebrate with us tonight," McSally said.

McSally also addressed what another term would look like whether Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton win tonight.

"All of my nine bills passed through the House have been very bipartisan nearly unanimous and passed through the Senate and signed by this president, so I’ll work with anybody," she said.

Heinz spent the evening across town with southern Arizona Democrats.
