The measles outbreak stemming from a federal detention facility was the largest measles outbreak in the U.S. to date. A total of 22 cases were reported during a three month period.

But Dr. Cara Christ, who is with the Arizona Department of Health, says the state has seen much worse.

“You know in the early '90s, we were seeing in the hundreds of cases. So I think in 1990 we had 252 cases reported and in 1991 we had 441 cases,” she said.

Christ said around that time, recommendations were made to get two doses of the MMR. Improvements to the actual vaccine also made it more effective.

Christ said in 1992, there were only three cases of measles in the state.
