Phoenix police released the name of the 12-year-old boy who died while hiking in the heat. Cody Flom collapsed late Friday afternoon in North Phoenix.

Police said Cody was hiking with a man in the Sonoran Desert Preserve when Cody became sick. The man tried to carry him off the trail and tried dialing 911, but his phone did not work. Police said he then left the boy to get help. Cody was airlifted to a hospital and later died. Investigators said the pair had 2 liters of water with them. It was unclear how long they had been hiking.

According to the National Weather Service, Phoenix reached 100 degrees by 10 a.m. Friday and hit a high of 112 just after 5:30 p.m.
